What Is Open During Government Shutdown?
AP/Peg Broadcasting News Sunday January 21, 2018

Now that the government has shutdown, many are concerned just how it will affect their daily lives. For most of us, the repercussions will not be felt immediately. The air traffic control system, food inspection, Medicare, veterans' health care and many other essential government programs will run as usual. The Social Security Administration will not only send out benefits but will also continue to take applications - though replacements for lost Social Security cards could have to wait. The Postal Service, which is self-funded, will keep delivering the mail. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will continue to respond to disasters. The Interior Department says national parks and other public lands will remain as accessible as possible. The Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo will stay open through the weekend but close Monday. The shutdown means you may have trouble getting a passport, receiving help from the IRS, and those who are paid by the federal government like U.S. service women and men may not get a paycheck if the shutdown is prolonged.
