Railroad Wants Additional $5,000 For Library Property
Peg Broadcasting News Saturday November 11, 2017

The Cumberland County Budget Committee has approved paying an additional $5,000 for land under the Art Circle Public Library after Norfolk Southern Railroad upped its asking price to $45,000, the Crossville Chronicle reports. Earlier this year, Norfolk Southern notified the county that approximately a quarter acre to a half acre of the library building and the adjacent parking lot are built on railroad property. The railroad tracks where the library now sits were removed some 20 years ago. In July, County Mayor Kenneth Carey, Jr. was told that Northfolk Southern would sell the property for $40,000. Just a few months later the price tag has apparently gone up by $5,000 to $45,000 and Mayor Carey says the railroad company is willing to take the matter to court. According to the Crossville Chronicle, the Budget Committee unanimously approved a motion to pay the extra $5,000 pending a survey before completion of the land purchase. The resolution must still be approved by the County Commission.

Defense to focus on Haslam relationship with conspirator
AP Friday November 10, 2017

The fraud trial of former executives and sales representatives at the truck stop chain run by Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is wrapping up its first week. The attorney for the company's onetime president has signaled the relationship between Haslam and one of the chief conspirators will become a focus of the defense. The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that the lawyer for former Pilot Flying J President Mark Hazelwood raised the issue Thursday in the cross-examination of a former director. The ex-director is one of 14 executives and sales representatives who have pleaded guilty in the case. Haslam has denied any prior knowledge about the scheme to defraud unsophisticated trucking company customers and has not been charged in the case. Hazelwood and three others are on trial in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In a statement, Tennessee Senate Speaker Randy McNally said he will miss Overbey's service in the state's upper chamber, but is confident Overbey will do an outstanding job as prosecutor.
