The National Park Service and the Tennessee Highway Patrol are just now releasing information on an amazing rescue that occurred last weekend in Scott County. Officials say that on Saturday, January 13, a husband and wife, along with their dog, got lost while hiking in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The couple called their daughter on Saturday night and told her they could not find their vehicle. After spending a night in the woods in sub-freezing temperatures, they managed to call their daughter again on Sunday morning. The Tennessee Highway Patrol began a helicopter search over the area and about an hour and a half later, they located the woman and the dog. She told the searchers she became separated from her husband. He was located shortly after laying on the ground and barely moving. The wife was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening, cold weather related injuries, including frostbite. She is expected to recover. The husband was flown to The University of Tennessee Medical Center in serious condition. (Photo courtesy tn.gov)
